Position: Chair of the Board – Housing and Social Care
Location: Shropshire (with some flexible working)
Remuneration: £25,000 per annum
Time Commitment: Approx. 3–4 days per month


About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Chair of the Board to lead our housing and social care organisation in Shropshire. The Chair will provide strategic leadership to the Board of Trustees/Directors, ensuring effective governance, oversight, and support to the Chief Executive and executive team.

The role is central to shaping our strategic direction, promoting excellence in housing and social care, and ensuring our services continue to improve the lives of people across Shropshire.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clear and effective leadership to the Board, enabling strong governance and effective decision-making.

  • Support and challenge the Chief Executive, acting as a trusted partner while ensuring accountability.

  • Lead the development and delivery of organisational strategy in line with our mission and values.

  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and financial obligations, safeguarding the organisation’s long-term sustainability.

  • Champion housing and social care issues at local and national levels, acting as an ambassador for the organisation.

  • Foster a culture of inclusion, transparency, and high performance across the Board and executive leadership team.

  • Ensure the voices of service users, tenants, and local communities are central to Board discussions and decision-making.

  • Promote positive relationships with external stakeholders, including commissioners, regulators, local authorities, and partner organisations.

Qualifications

Person Specification

Essential

  • Proven experience in a senior leadership or non-executive role, ideally within housing, health, or social care sectors.

  • Strong understanding of governance, risk, and financial management in a regulated environment.

  • Excellent chairing and facilitation skills, with the ability to build consensus and drive effective decision-making.

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to see the bigger picture while ensuring accountability.

  • Commitment to improving housing and social care outcomes for people and communities.

  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to represent the organisation externally at the highest levels.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the housing and social care landscape in Shropshire and the wider West Midlands.

  • Previous experience of working with boards, trustees, or regulators in the sector.

  • Lived experience or professional background in housing, health, or social care.
