Podcast

The NED Capital Podcast is our audio companion to the guidance we publish on this site. It looks at how boards work, why the right non-executive director matters, and what happens behind the scenes when a company recruits for its board. Episodes are short enough to listen to on a commute or between meetings, and each one connects to the written guides in our NED Knowledge Centre if you want to go deeper.

This page brings together where to listen, a selection of episodes, and the articles that sit alongside them. If you would like to suggest a topic or a question for a future episode, get in touch.

Who the Podcast Is For

The podcast is made for three groups of listeners.

  • Business owners, chairs and CEOs who are thinking about their first independent director, strengthening an existing board or preparing for investment, a sale or a period of change. Our guide to whether smaller companies need a NED is a good companion for this group.
  • Investors and private equity teams who appoint chairs and NEDs to portfolio boards and want to understand what good board support looks like. See how private equity governance works.
  • Executives and serving NEDs who are building a non-executive career or adding to a portfolio. Our NED Career Hub organises our career guidance in one place.

Why We Make a Podcast

Most of the questions we are asked about boards are practical. When does a company need its first independent director? What does a chair actually do between meetings? How much time does a NED role take? What makes one candidate stand out on a shortlist? Written guides answer those questions in detail, but conversation is often a better way to show how they play out in real boardrooms, where judgement, relationships and timing matter as much as rules.

A podcast also suits the people we work with. Chairs, founders and senior executives have little spare time at a desk, but many listen while travelling. Each episode is designed to be useful on its own and to point you to further reading when you want it.

Getting the Most From an Episode

Board questions rarely have a single right answer, so the most useful way to listen is with your own board in mind. If you are a chair or owner, think about where your board is today and what it will need in two or three years’ time, whether that is investment, a sale, regulatory change or succession. If you are an executive considering board work, listen for what boards value in a non-executive and how that compares with the experience you would bring.

Make a note of anything you would like to explore further. Most themes raised in conversation are covered in more detail in our written guides, and if a question is specific to your own board, we are always happy to talk it through in confidence.

Themes the Podcast Connects To

The podcast sits alongside our written guidance. If an episode raises a question, these are the places to go next.

Building and Refreshing a Board

Boards change over time, and the right board for a founder-owned business is rarely the right board once outside investors arrive or a sale comes into view. Our guides on the cost of waiting too long to refresh your board and avoiding groupthink when selecting NEDs look at how boards stay effective as the business evolves.

Chairs, Committees and Governance

The chair sets the tone for the whole board, and committees do much of the detailed work. See what a company chairman does, board committees explained and our UK guide to what corporate governance is.

Non-Executive Careers

For listeners building a board career, the practical questions are about routes in, CVs, interviews, fees and time. Our NED salary guide, NED interview questions and preparation and guide to how much time a NED really commits each month answer the questions we hear most often.

What a Non-Executive Director Actually Does

Many listeners come to the podcast with a broad sense of what a NED is but want to understand the role in practice: how independence works, what the legal duties are, and how a non-executive adds value without running the business. Our guides to common misconceptions about the NED role, the legal duties of a NED in the UK and the shift from executive to non-executive cover those questions in depth.

Regulated and Private Equity Boards

Regulated firms and private equity-backed companies have their own board dynamics. For regulated boards, start with FCA-regulated board governance. For private equity, see the role of a PE chair.
