From first call to appointment

Every search is retained and agreed in writing before any activity begins. Our step-by-step guide for chairs explains each stage in more detail.

  1. 01Initial conversationWe arrange a call at a time that suits you and ask about the board as it stands, the gap you need to fill, the ownership and governance context and your timetable.
  2. 02Brief and proposalWe set out the role specification, candidate profile, search approach, timetable and fees. Nothing proceeds until you have agreed it.
  3. 03Search and shortlistOur senior search team maps the market, approaches serving directors in confidence and checks independence, time commitment, conflicts and references before you see a shortlist.
  4. 04Interviews and appointmentWe coordinate interviews with the chair and nomination committee, support the offer and formal appointment steps, and help with induction.

What to include in your enquiry

You do not need a finished role specification. These details help us give useful advice from the first conversation:

  • The type of organisation, its ownership and approximate size.
  • The role you have in mind: independent NED, chair, committee chair, senior independent director or trustee.
  • The skills or experience the board is missing, and why the appointment is needed now.
  • Any framework that applies, such as the FCA regime, the UK Corporate Governance Code, the QCA Code or the Charity Commission’s requirements.
  • Your timetable and any board or investor milestones the appointment needs to meet.

Frequently asked questions

Is the first conversation confidential?Yes. Many enquiries involve board changes that have not been announced, and we treat every conversation in confidence from the outset.
How quickly will you respond?We respond to enquiries promptly during business hours. For an urgent appointment, calling 0203 137 2496 is the fastest route.

How long does a search take?It depends on the role, the market for that experience and the diaries of the board and candidates. We agree a realistic timetable with you before we start, with extra time where FCA approval is needed.
Can we meet in person?Yes. We regularly hold meetings at our London office on Great Portland Street, and can meet at our West Midlands office in Cannock, at your premises or by video call.
Do you only recruit non-executive directors?Board appointments are our specialism. As one of the five firms of FD Capital Group, alongside FD Capital, we can also help with finance and executive appointments, so one conversation is enough to start.
