Board Expertise for Food and Beverage Businesses
Food and drink is one of the UK’s largest manufacturing sectors and one of its most demanding to govern. Margins are tight, input costs move quickly, a handful of large retailers dominate routes to market, and a single food safety failure can damage a brand overnight. At the same time, the sector attracts steady investment, from family-owned producers and founder-led brands to private equity platforms building groups through acquisition.
NED Capital recruits non-executive directors, chairs and committee chairs for food and drink manufacturers, branded consumer goods businesses, ingredient and food service suppliers, contract caterers, hospitality and restaurant groups, and food technology companies. Searches are run by our senior search team under founder Adrian Lawrence FCA, a Fellow of the ICAEW and former listed-company finance director.
If your business sells mainly through its own stores or online, our page on retail and e-commerce NED recruitment covers the consumer-facing side in more detail. Restaurant, pub and hotel groups may also find our hospitality and leisure NED recruitment page useful.
What Makes Food and Beverage Governance Different
Food safety is a board responsibility. The Food Safety Act 1990 and the regime overseen by the Food Standards Agency and local authorities place clear obligations on food businesses. A board cannot delegate the consequences of a contamination incident or a product recall. It needs directors who can ask searching questions about HACCP systems, supplier assurance, testing, traceability and incident response, and who know what good looks like.
Allergens and labelling. Allergen management has become a high-profile governance issue, particularly since the rules on full ingredient labelling for food prepacked for direct sale came into force in England in 2021. The FSA’s allergen guidance for food businesses sets out what is expected. Labelling errors can cause serious harm to consumers, and boards need assurance that controls work in practice, not just on paper.
Retailer relationships and route to market. For many manufacturers and brands, a small number of major grocers account for most of their revenue. Pricing, promotions, ranging decisions and supply terms can make or break a year. The Groceries Code Adjudicator oversees how the largest retailers deal with their direct suppliers, and a non-executive who has sat on either side of those negotiations brings valuable perspective to the board.
Commodity, energy and labour costs. Food businesses are exposed to volatile input prices for ingredients, packaging, energy and labour. Boards need to oversee hedging and procurement strategy, pricing power and cost recovery, and the working capital consequences of price swings.
Supply chain integrity and ethics. Responsible sourcing, food fraud risk, animal welfare, packaging and environmental impact all sit with the board. Larger businesses must publish a modern slavery statement under section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015, approved by the board. Our operations and supply chain NED page describes the profile of director who helps boards with these questions.
Health, nutrition and changing regulation. Rules on the promotion and advertising of less healthy foods, and growing scrutiny of nutrition, affect product development and marketing. A board needs to treat this as strategic, because reformulation and portfolio changes take time and money.
The Food and Beverage Businesses We Recruit For
Food and drink manufacturers. From bakery, dairy and meat processing to soft drinks, brewing and distilling, manufacturers need boards that can govern safety, capacity investment, retailer dependence and cost inflation. Typical appointments include an independent chair, an audit chair with manufacturing finance experience, and a non-executive with technical or operational food expertise. Our manufacturing and engineering NED page covers the wider manufacturing context.
Consumer brands. Founder-led and investor-backed brands need directors who have scaled a consumer business: building distribution, managing a brand through rapid growth, and preparing for investment or sale. Our commercial and marketing NED page explains this specialism.
Ingredients, food service and contract catering. Business-to-business food companies have different commercial dynamics, often built on long-term contracts, tender processes and service-level obligations. Boards benefit from directors with contract management, operational and public sector supply experience.
Hospitality and restaurant groups. Multi-site operators need non-executives who understand site economics, property commitments, people costs and the customer experience. Industry bodies such as UKHospitality are a useful source for boards following sector issues.
Food technology and alternative proteins. Early-stage food technology businesses combine technology and scale-up risk with food regulation, including approval processes for novel foods. They need boards that can support fundraising and commercialisation while keeping safety and regulatory compliance in view.
Private Equity and Buy-and-Build in Food
Food and beverage is an active sector for private equity, and many groups are built by acquiring and integrating smaller producers and brands. These businesses need non-executives who can oversee acquisitions, integration of sites and systems, food safety standards across a growing estate, and preparation for exit. Our pages on buy-and-build governance, NEDs for private equity boards and exit governance explain how we approach these mandates.
Family-owned food businesses are common too, and many appoint their first independent director to help with growth, succession or a future sale. Our page on whether private and family businesses need a non-executive director covers the usual triggers.

Common Food and Beverage Board Appointments
Independent chair. Often appointed at the point of investment, when a founder steps back, or ahead of a sale. See our non-executive chair recruitment service.
Audit and risk committee chair. Food businesses need audit chairs comfortable with inventory and margin accounting, rebates and promotional funding from retailers, and the controls behind them. Our audit committee chair recruitment page covers this role.
Technical and food safety NED. A director who has led technical, quality or food safety functions can challenge management in a way commercial directors cannot.
Commercial NED. A director with senior retail buying, category management or brand experience helps the board understand and manage its most important customer relationships.
ESG and sustainability NED. Packaging, emissions, sourcing and welfare are increasingly important to customers, retailers and investors. Our ESG board chair page explains this role.
How We Run a Food and Beverage Board Search
A strong food and beverage brief is specific. The sector is broad enough that a general “food industry NED” specification produces a weak shortlist, so we work with the chair, chief executive and investors to agree exactly where the board’s gaps are: food safety and technical oversight, retailer and commercial experience, operations and supply chain, brand building, or finance and transactions. We also agree independence, committee roles and time commitment.
We then research the market directly and approach serving directors and senior executives in confidence, drawing on the shared network of the five specialist firms in our group. Candidates are assessed for sector knowledge, board judgement, independence and conflicts, which matter in a sector where experienced people often have ties to competitors, suppliers or retailers. We present a shortlist you can compare like for like, and support interviews, referencing, terms and induction. The full process is described on our non-executive director recruitment page, and typical fee levels are covered in our NED salary guide.
We work in line with the voluntary code of conduct for executive search firms. Listed food companies will also want appointments that reflect the UK Corporate Governance Code, and the Food and Drink Federation is a good source of sector policy for boards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a food business need a NED with food safety experience?
Most food manufacturers benefit from at least one director who can challenge food safety and technical controls. Other non-executives can bring commercial, finance or investor experience, and a mix usually works best.
We supply the major grocers. What kind of NED helps most?
Often a director who has worked in senior retail buying or category management, or who has led a supplier through tough retailer negotiations. They help the board understand pricing, promotions and ranging decisions from the customer’s side.
We are a founder-led brand preparing for investment. When should we appoint a chair?
Ideally before the raise. Investors look closely at board quality, and an experienced chair who has scaled a consumer brand can strengthen the case and help manage the process.
Do you recruit for family-owned food businesses?
Yes. Many of the sector’s businesses are family-owned, and we recruit independent directors who understand family ownership, succession and long-term stewardship.
How long does a food and beverage NED search take?
It depends on the role and how specialist the brief is. We agree the timetable with you before the search begins and keep you updated as it progresses.
