Location: Ipswich
Remuneration: £7,000 per annum (plus reasonable expenses)
Commitment: Approximately 1–2 days per month


About the Role

We are seeking to appoint a Non-Executive Director (NED) with expertise in Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence to join our Board. This is an exciting opportunity to influence strategy, innovation, and governance as we continue to embrace digital technologies and data-driven approaches to deliver sustainable growth and impact.

The NED will provide independent insight, constructive challenge, and guidance on the organisation’s digital agenda, ensuring that new technologies—including AI—are harnessed responsibly and effectively to enhance services, improve efficiency, and maintain ethical standards.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic oversight on digital transformation, AI adoption, and emerging technologies.

  • Contribute to Board discussions with independent judgement and constructive challenge.

  • Ensure digital and AI initiatives align with the organisation’s mission, values, and long-term goals.

  • Act as a critical friend to the executive team, supporting innovation while maintaining appropriate governance and risk management.

  • Guide the Board in understanding the opportunities, risks, and ethical considerations of AI and digital technologies.

  • Champion data security, digital inclusion, and sustainability in decision-making.

  • Leverage networks and expertise to strengthen the organisation’s digital strategy.

Qualifications

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Proven experience in digital transformation, AI strategy, or technology leadership.

  • Strong understanding of the strategic, operational, and ethical dimensions of AI.

  • Previous experience of governance (executive or non-executive), or a demonstrable ability to contribute at Board level.

  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to challenge constructively.

  • Commitment to the organisation’s mission, values, and public service ethos.

Desirable:

  • Experience in cybersecurity, data governance, or digital policy.

  • Previous NED or trustee experience.

  • Strong connections across the digital/AI ecosystem.

Job Benefits

Time Commitment & Remuneration

  • Approximately 1–2 days per month, including quarterly Board meetings, committee involvement, and preparation.

  • £7,000 per annum, plus reasonable travel and subsistence expenses.
