Leeds Non-Executive Recruitment

Leeds Non-Executive Director Recruitment

NED Capital is a specialist board recruitment firm. We work exclusively on non-executive, chair, trustee and board advisory appointments: not executive roles and not volume recruitment. Leeds boards come to us when they need an independent director with a particular mix of experience, such as overseeing an FCA-regulated firm, preparing a family business for investment, chairing an audit committee ahead of a sale, or bringing commercial discipline to a charity or housing association. Our non-executive director recruitment service is built for exactly these briefs.

We do not have a Leeds office. We cover Leeds, West Yorkshire and the wider region from our London office at 167–169 Great Portland Street and our West Midlands office at Watling Court, Orbital Plaza, Cannock, and we meet boards and candidates in person in Leeds where the search needs it. Leeds has direct rail links to London, Manchester, York and the North East, so boards here can draw on a wide candidate pool. Searches are run by our senior search team under founder Adrian Lawrence FCA, a Fellow of the ICAEW and former listed-company finance director.

Call 0203 137 2496 or email recruitment@nedcapital.co.uk to discuss a Leeds or Yorkshire board appointment.

The Leeds Board Market

Leeds is the largest city in West Yorkshire and one of the biggest centres for financial, legal and professional services in the UK outside London. Banks, building societies, insurers, wealth managers, payments businesses and a large community of law and accountancy firms are based in or around the city centre. Leeds is also home to public financial institutions, including the government-owned National Wealth Fund, which has its registered office in the city. The West Yorkshire Combined Authority covers Leeds alongside Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield.

Beyond financial services, the Leeds economy is broad. The city has a strong digital and technology sector, a large healthcare and health technology community, retail and consumer businesses, and manufacturing and engineering across West Yorkshire. The University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University add research, spinout activity and a large education sector, and the region has a strong base of family-owned businesses, charities, housing associations and public bodies.

That breadth means Leeds boards look for very different directors. A regulated firm needs independent NEDs who can satisfy the FCA. A family manufacturer may need its first independent director ahead of succession. A PE-backed services business needs a chair who has been through an exit. A housing association or charity needs trustees who understand its regulator and its community. We search each market separately rather than treating Leeds as a single pool.

Boards We Recruit For in Leeds

Financial services and fintech. Banks, building societies, insurers, lenders, wealth managers, payments firms and fintechs in Leeds need independent NEDs and committee chairs who meet the FCA’s expectations. Many of these appointments fall within the Senior Managers and Certification Regime and need FCA approval before the director takes their seat. Our financial services NED recruitment, fintech NED recruitment and FCA SMCR INED appointments pages explain how we handle them.

Legal and professional services. Law firms, accountancy practices and consultancies increasingly appoint independent non-executives to their management or partnership boards, particularly as they grow, take outside investment or prepare for succession. Our legal services and law firm NED recruitment and professional services NED recruitment pages cover these boards.

Technology and healthcare. Software, data and health technology businesses need directors who understand recurring revenue, product development, data protection and cyber risk, and the expectations of venture investors. Healthcare providers and suppliers need board members who understand clinical governance and regulation. See our technology NED recruitment and healthcare and life sciences NED recruitment services.

Private equity and family businesses. Yorkshire has an active mid-market private equity scene and a large number of family-owned companies. PE-backed boards need chairs and NEDs who understand investor reporting, value creation plans and exit preparation; the British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association sets out the industry’s reporting expectations. Family businesses often need their first independent director to support succession or investment, and our guide on whether private and family businesses need a NED explains when that point arrives. See also our private equity and venture-backed NED recruitment service.

Manufacturing, retail and consumer businesses. West Yorkshire manufacturers and engineering firms need directors who understand operations, supply chains and capital investment, while retail and consumer boards need multi-channel and brand experience. Our manufacturing and engineering and retail and e-commerce services cover these boards.

Education, health, housing, charities and public bodies. University and college governing bodies, academy trusts, NHS trusts, housing associations, charities and public bodies each work under their own frameworks. Higher education providers in England are regulated by the Office for Students, housing associations by the Regulator of Social Housing and charities by the Charity Commission. We cover these through our education and higher education, NHS trust, housing association and trustee recruitment services.

What Leeds Boards Need From a NED

Whatever the sector, the strongest Leeds NEDs share a handful of qualities, and our assessment is built around them.

Sector credibility with an outside view. Leeds boards in financial services, legal services and healthcare need directors who understand how their sector works, but the most useful NEDs also bring experience from outside it, such as a different market, ownership model or stage of growth. We look for both.

Genuine independence. Family-owned and investor-backed boards often include founders, family members and shareholder representatives. An independent NED can challenge all of them. We test independence formally, and our article on independent and affiliated NEDs explains the distinction.

Financial literacy. Every NED must be able to read the accounts and question cash flow, margins and funding plans, not only the audit committee chair. Our guide to what an audit committee actually does sets out what boards expect, and our audit committee chair recruitment service covers the specialist role.

Time and availability. Experienced Yorkshire directors are in demand and often hold several board roles. We confirm capacity, potential conflicts and travel commitments before anyone reaches your shortlist.

How We Run a Leeds NED Search

Our Leeds searches follow our standard five-stage process: brief and board diagnostic, direct market research, structured candidate assessment, a shortlist of three to five candidates with written profiles, and support through interviews and appointment. For Leeds mandates we settle three questions early.

How specialist does the candidate need to be? A regulated firm may need a NED who can hold an SMF role; a law firm may need a director who understands partnership economics; a PE-backed business may need a chair who has led an exit. We agree which experience is essential and which is desirable before the research starts, so the shortlist reflects the board’s real priorities.

How local does the candidate need to be? Many Leeds boards are happy to appoint directors from Manchester, London, the Midlands or elsewhere in the UK, provided they can attend board meetings and engage with the executive team. For community, housing, health and public sector boards, knowledge of Leeds and West Yorkshire matters more. We agree the catchment at brief stage, and our virtual NED service suits boards that meet mostly online.

Which governance framework applies? The UK Corporate Governance Code, the QCA Code, the SMCR, investor rights in a shareholders’ agreement, the Charity Governance Code, or a higher education or NHS framework. This shapes the independence assessment and the committee capabilities we look for. NHS non-executive and many public body appointments follow public processes governed by the Governance Code for Public Appointments, and NHS England publishes current non-executive opportunities.

For the full method, see our step-by-step guide to the NED recruitment process. If the search is for a chair rather than a NED, see our chairman of the board recruitment service.

NED Fees in Leeds

NED fees in Leeds broadly follow the national market and vary with the size and complexity of the organisation, the time commitment and any committee chair responsibilities. Regulated financial services and listed company roles usually sit at the upper end, early-stage company boards often combine a modest cash fee with an equity or option element, NHS non-executive pay is set nationally, and many charity trustees are unpaid. Our NED salary guide sets out current benchmarks, and our article on how NED fees are typically structured explains the options.

NED Recruitment Across Yorkshire and the North

We recruit for boards across Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Harrogate, York, Sheffield, Hull and the wider Yorkshire region. Regional boards in food and drink, manufacturing, logistics, energy, housing and the public sector draw on a different candidate pool from Leeds’s financial and professional services community, and we search both. Leeds’s own public services and partnerships are listed by Leeds City Council, and our local government NED recruitment page covers council-owned companies. Many Yorkshire boards also look to directors across the Pennines and in London, so we work closely with our Manchester NED recruitment, Liverpool NED recruitment and London NED recruitment searches. See all our locations.

Governance Standards We Apply

We assess every candidate against the framework that applies to your organisation, including the UK Corporate Governance Code, the QCA Code, the SMCR for regulated firms, the Charity Governance Code and the expectations of sector regulators. We draw on the guidance of the Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland, and we work in line with the voluntary code of conduct for executive search firms. NED Capital is one of five specialist firms in the FD Capital Group, so candidates also come from a shared network of chairs, CFOs and chief executives across the group.
