Our Nine NED Specialisms
Every board benefits from experience, but not all experience is the same. A board preparing for a sale needs different input from one recovering from a covenant breach, and a business embarking on an ERP programme needs a different director from one entering the US market. NED Capital connects organisations with non-executive directors who bring more than credentials: they bring practical leadership in the specific area where the board needs strengthening.
Whether you are a listed business seeking independent oversight, a private company professionalising its board or a scale-up that needs strategic guidance, we can introduce directors who have done the work themselves. Our non-executive director recruitment service is structured around the nine specialisms below. Searches are run by our senior search team, each with at least ten years in senior-level recruitment, under founder Adrian Lawrence FCA.
If you would rather search by industry, our sectors page covers more than 30 sectors, from financial services to charities. Most briefs combine the two: a functional specialism, such as finance, applied in a particular sector, such as social housing.
1. Finance and Governance
Former CFOs, finance directors and audit committee chairs.
Directors in our finance and governance specialism have navigated IPOs, restructurings, acquisitions and funding rounds. They bring rigour to board reporting, strengthen control frameworks and provide the financial discipline that sustains investor and lender confidence. Many go on to chair the audit committee, a role the UK Corporate Governance Code expects to be held by a director with recent and relevant financial experience. See our dedicated audit committee chair recruitment service for these appointments.
2. Commercial and Marketing
Former CEOs, chief commercial officers, CMOs and commercial directors.
Our commercial and marketing NEDs have built market-leading businesses and understand what drives sustainable growth. They keep the board focused on customers, pricing, brand positioning and the commercial strategy that links the plan to revenue. They are particularly valuable where a board is dominated by finance or operational experience and lacks a strong voice for the market.
3. Technology and Digital
Former CTOs, CIOs and chief digital officers.
Directors in our technology and digital specialism have led complex transformation programmes, implemented large-scale systems and managed cyber resilience. They help boards evaluate technology investment, data governance and the strategic implications of AI and automation. The NCSC Cyber Security Toolkit for Boards sets out the questions every board should be able to answer on cyber risk, and a technology NED makes sure those questions are asked properly. Boards with a specific change programme may also want a digital transformation NED.
4. People and Culture
Former chief people officers, HR directors and ESG leaders.
Our people and culture NEDs understand how culture, leadership and human capital drive performance. They provide oversight of workforce engagement, executive remuneration, succession and the social dimension of ESG, drawing on standards developed by bodies such as the CIPD. Many are well placed to chair a remuneration committee; see our remuneration committee chair recruitment page.
5. Operations and Supply Chain
COOs, manufacturing directors and supply chain leaders.
Directors in our operations and supply chain specialism have built resilient, efficient and scalable operations. They bring practical insight into cost control, performance measurement, procurement and operational risk, balancing strategy with deliverability. These directors are frequently sought by manufacturing, logistics, retail and food businesses.
6. Growth and International Expansion
Executives who have scaled businesses at home and overseas.
Our growth and international expansion NEDs have opened new markets, managed cross-border acquisitions and built the commercial infrastructure that supports ambitious growth. They are particularly valued by businesses entering new geographies or preparing for institutional investment. For overseas board appointments, see our international NED recruitment service.
7. Transformation and Change Leadership
Leaders of digital transformation, ERP and post-merger integration programmes.
Directors in our transformation and change leadership specialism have managed large-scale change, from ERP implementations to post-merger integrations and operating model redesigns. They give the board an informed view of programme governance, delivery risk and the change management discipline that decides whether a transformation succeeds or overruns.
8. Turnaround and Restructuring
Executives with direct experience of financial distress and recovery.
Our turnaround and restructuring NEDs have taken businesses through financial distress, operational turnaround and negotiations with lenders and creditors. Where a board needs an independent director who can ask the hardest questions and support management through a difficult period, this profile provides the credibility and composure the situation demands. Many have worked alongside insolvency and restructuring professionals of the kind represented by R3, and understand directors’ duties when a company is in or near financial difficulty.
9. Fractional and Portfolio Executives
Portfolio NEDs, fractional CFOs and advisory board members.
Senior professionals, often post-exit or pursuing a plural career, who combine NED roles with advisory or part-time executive positions. For SMEs and scale-ups that need executive-level experience without a full-time commitment, these appointments bridge advisory input and operational leadership. See our portfolio NED recruitment page, and our guide to hybrid board roles. Through our sister practice FD Capital we can also introduce fractional finance leaders.
How We Assess and Match Candidates
Beyond the CV. Every engagement begins with your strategy, board composition, culture and challenges. We go beyond career history to assess governance understanding, values, boardroom communication style and alignment with the stage and objectives of the business.
Specialism-first matching. We start by identifying which blend of experience would most strengthen your board. Sometimes it is financial discipline, sometimes digital transformation, sometimes people and culture. A board skills matrix is often the clearest way to show where the gaps are, and our specialisms framework then lets us search for that experience precisely.
Independence and time commitment. We assess independence against the relevant governance code and confirm that each candidate has the capacity for the role, including committee work and the extra time required in a transaction or a crisis.
Referenced and briefed. Every candidate is referenced and briefed on your business before introduction, so the first conversation starts at the right level. Our guide to the NED recruitment process explains each stage.
Why Boards Choose NED Capital
Depth of network. Active relationships with serving and aspiring non-executives across every major discipline and sector, not simply a database.
Specialist focus. We work exclusively on non-executive, chair, trustee and board-level appointments, rather than placing NEDs alongside general executive hires.
Experienced search team. Our senior search team, each with at least ten years in senior-level recruitment, works under founder Adrian Lawrence FCA, a former listed-company finance director. That gives clients a search partner who understands board dynamics from the inside.
Multi-specialism capability. Where a board needs several appointments at once, for example a new chair, an audit committee chair and a technology NED, we can run the searches together against a single board succession plan, so the final board is balanced rather than assembled piecemeal.
For Aspiring Non-Executive Directors
If you are an experienced executive considering your first board role, the specialisms above show how boards think about the experience they need. Our guides on how to become a non-executive director and NED career pathways explain how to position your background, and you can register as a NED candidate to be considered for future mandates. The Chartered Governance Institute also offers useful resources for directors new to board governance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which specialism does our board need?
Start with your strategy for the next three to five years and the decisions the board will have to make. A business preparing to raise capital may need finance and governance strength; one going through a systems change may need technology or transformation experience. We help you work this out at the briefing stage.
Can one NED cover more than one specialism?
Often, yes. Many directors combine, for example, finance with turnaround experience, or commercial with international expansion. We assess candidates against every element of the brief, not just their headline background.
Do you recruit chairs as well as NEDs?
Yes. Chairs are often drawn from across the specialisms. See our non-executive chair recruitment page.
